Dreamland science reporter Linda Howe writes that
after many warnings, it's finally happened: Yellowstone has
become dangerously restless. But it's not the volcano
eruption that has
long been
anticipated, it's an "intense earthquake swarm," consisting
of 250 separate quakes, that could lead to an eruption.

Why We're Adding a Leap Second in 2009
01-Jan-2009

…But we don't need to adjust our clocks -
The spin of the Earth is slowing down. Not by much; only
about 0.002 seconds a day (it varies), relative to our modern
definition of the second. The varying rotation of the Earth is
due to the cumulative effect of friction from the ocean's
tides, the moon’s orbital momentum, snow (and the lack
thereof) at the polar ice caps, the 23-degree tilt of the
earth, the atmosphere, solar wind, space dust and magnetic
storms. Because of all these factors, the earth does not
rotate EXACTLY one time every 24 hours (or 86,400 seconds).

2009: Time to Quit
01-Jan-2009

Who finds it harder, men or women? -
The New
Year is coming soon, which is the time for all those
resolutions. We’ll bet that a big one on every smoker’s list is
quitting.
Women have more withdrawal symptoms but they also have
more reason to quit, because, contrary to what most women
believe, smoking makes you fat.

Where are the Emissions Coming From?
31-Dec-2008

It's still a mystery -
Pollution cuts the earth in half and so does global warming.
NASA satellites are tracking just where, on the earth, the
most greenhouse gases are being emitted—so countries can
no longer plead ignorance about what's going on within (or
rising up from) their borders.

Female & Fat?
30-Dec-2008

…But STRONG! -
Having an imperfect body may come with some substantial
benefits. The hormones that make women physically stronger,
more competitive and better able to deal with stress also
tend to redistribute fat from the hips to the waist, so in
societies and situations where women are under pressure to
procure resources, they may be less likely to have the classic
hourglass figure.

Why Quitting is Harder for Blacks
29-Dec-2008

Everyone's top New Year's Resolution -
Quitting smoking is one of the top items on most people's
New Year's resolutions lists, and it certainly should be if
you're black because
blacks are
more unhealthy than whites—especially when it comes to
asthma—despite the fact that African-Americans are much
less likely to smoke than whites are during their teens.

example. A famous experiment—done in the past and

Whitley's Journal: Christmas at Last!
24-Dec-2008

In his last
journal, Whitley seemed kind of gloomy, but he's cheered up
for Christmas. In his
latest
journal, he writes: "Christmas has come, and with it a
renewed sense of inner joy. I always have a rough time
between October and December, because that's the part of
1985 that I was dealing with the visitors, but unable to
consciously remember what was happening at night. When
you see in
Communion
the scene of me prowling around with the shotgun, that's
when it happened." If you love Whitley's
